The Gamgee family is one of the oldest hobbit families in the Shire. The name ‘Gamgee’ originates from the village Gamwich in the Westfarthing.
Already Sam’s father Hamfast ‘Gaffer’ Gamgee had worked in Mr. Bilbo Baggins’ garden, first under apprenticeship of his cousin Holman Greenhand, then, after 20 years, he became the head gardener. It had been Hamfast who, during the auction of Mr. Bilbo’s possessions after Bilbo had been presumed dead, had taken care of the garden, saving it from hundreds of stomping feet. Hamfast was accounted a leading authority on root vegetables, especially potatoes. Hamfast married Bell Goodchild and they had six children: Hamson, Halfred, Daisy, May, Samwise and Marigold. Samwise ‘Sam’, Hamfast’s youngest son, followed in his footsteps and became his apprentice.
Sam was born on April 6th, 2980 Third Age, or in the Shire-Reckoning 1380, in Number 3 Bagshot Row, at the bottom of The Hill in Hobbiton. Sam and Bilbo shared a very close relationship, as Sam had worked in Mr. Bilbo’s gardens since earliest youth, and Bilbo in return had taught the young hobbit how to read and write. Furthermore, Sam always had enjoyed listening to old Bilbo telling him his tales. He especially had favoured Bilbo’s tales about the elves, and often dreamed of experiencing adventures himself, meeting elves and dwarves, getting to know new cultures, seeing new wondrous places, learning more and more. Sam’s father, on the other hand, had always found his youngest son’s interest in elves a little worrisome.
In 3001, Sam had taken over most of his father’s duties concerning the garden of Bag End, keeping it green, fresh and tidy. Bilbo Baggins, at that time, had already adopted the son of his cousin once removed, Frodo Baggins. Frodo and Sam both shared the same interest for Mr. Bilbo’s stories from outside the Shire, which certainly was an important foundation for their deep friendship they’d develop later on. Sam is most devoted to ‘Mister Frodo’, or ‘Master’, as he uses to call him.
In 3001, Sam is twenty-one years old. He is no usual hobbit. Although his speech, as well as his appearance, is quite plain and down-to-earth, Sam stands out because of his love for elves, his talent with poetry, and his wondrous view on the world (that there is more to the world than most hobbits are aware of) – all for which Bilbo is to thank. Sam is the embodiment of faithfulness, simplicity and decisiveness. He does not come from a noble family like his friends Frodo, Merry and Pippin. His family is not wealthy, he does not clad himself in noble clothes, and does not speak fine words. Also, his toes are often untidy instead of neatly brushed, and sometimes even have clumps of earth woven in it. But Sam makes all these little faults up with his braveness, his goodness, his humbleness, his loyalty to the Baggins family and his modesty.
Sam has many loves. And those loves he implements with much care and honesty, with endless loyalty and forgiveness, with interest and with deepest friendship. One of his greatest loves and interests is for flowers. He cares for them like his own children, planting them, watering them, talking to them and smiling gladly at every single blossom, and Sam never ceases wishing to learn more about them and their environment.
Another, of course is his (ridiculously large) family, foremost his parents – especially the old ‘Gaffer’, with whom he shares so many interests – and his five siblings. Hamson, his eldest brother, moved a little further away in the meantime, becoming a roper in Tighfield. Halfred, the second eldest, moved to the Northfarthing. Sam’s two elder sisters, May and Daisy, stayed close to the family. But Sam always had been especially fond of his only younger sibling, his sister Marigold. And as all Gamgees were very close to the Cotton family, it had been no surprise that Marigold had decided to wed young Tom Cotton. Thus, Sam came to know Tom’s sister Rose Cotton, and helplessly fell in love with her. However, Sam was by far too shy to actually speak with her. When it came to Rosie, Sam became a helpless, wordless fool, nervous and blushing. To him, she was the most beautiful hobbit girl ever.
Sam’s Westron name is Banazîr (simple minded) Galbasi.

Well, Sam was quite the difference to Pippin. From earliest childhood on, he had learnt how important working was. The Gamgees weren’t the wealthiest. They depended on the money work brought them. And what they worked for, they did with good conscience and heart. So, in all honesty good old Samwise could say that he loved his job. It was not the hardest one, being a gardener, but to Sam, it was life fulfilling. He tended each plant in old Mister Bilbo’s garden as if it were his own kid – attentively, with much care and pride. He plowed the earth, put seeds in and gently covered them with earth again, watered them, closely monitoring their growth, trimmed them, and cheered like no other when he found their first bud. He did all this whole-heartedly. And it was just a great big bonus that old Mister Bilbo had such faith in him, often told him one of his lovely stories, and taught him. Yes, Sam loved working.
This lovely day, Sam was on his way from The Hill to Stock in the Eastfarthing. It was no freetime activity, but Sam had to fetch some special seeds from a hobbit in Stock, to plant them in Mister Bilbo’s garden. And so, Sam wandered. He had a backpack packed with sandwiches, cookies and some water, and he had a walking stick in his hand. Not because he was old, no. Sam was quite young! But he enjoyed walking with a nice thick walking stick. Somehow that made him enjoy wandering even more. He was humming a tune and enjoying the green sunny day. The shade of the trees to the South, the soft laughter of some hobbit children further away, birds chirping, flowers and grass growing – Sam was happy.
Spring in general was his most beloved season. Everything in the world would change from brown and grey to this lovely shade of juicy yellow-green. There was no colour Sam liked more. And soon there would grow the first strawberries Sam could pick and eat with nice white cream.
He already was on his way back, having the new seeds safely packaged in a tissue in his backpack (which now was very empty, all the beverages gone already), when he spotted someone lying in the meadow ahead. Pulling up his belt over his belly button, he stepped closer. Why, I know that fuzzy-head! He thought to himself and grinned. ”Well, hullo, Master Peregrin!” He cheered out, walking toward the hobbit. ”What a wonderful way to spend this sunny day! May I join you for a short while?”
