The Forest of Fangorn is located at the south-eastern end of the Misty Mountains near the Gap of Rohan. The mountains formed the western border of Fangorn. At the end of the mountain range stood the stronghold of Isengard near the southwestern corner of the forest and this was where Saruman lived. To the east and south of Fangorn was the land of Rohan, and Lothlórien lay to the north and slightly east. Fangorn Forest stretched for many miles and held many paths. Tolkien stated that two important and significant rivers ran through the forest. To the north the Limlight flowed from the woods and then formed the northern border of Rohan. The river then merged into the larger Anduin river. In the south, the Entwash spread deep into the forest arriving from Methedras, a mountainous region located near the Misty Mountains. The river then flowed from Fangorn and was directed through Rohan to the Anduin river. The valley of Derndingle was located to the south-west. There was a path where the Entwash passed into a region called Wellinghall and this was where the Entwash passed the home of Treebeard, the shepherd of the forest. Fangorn Forest was said to be humid and trunks and branches grew thick where very little light penetrated the forest. Similarly Fangorn was said to be a dangerous and evil place like Mirkwood where huge spiders roamed the forest and other evil creatures lay, but this was not the case following the events of Lord of the Rings. The forest was home to many different kinds of trees. Huorns also lived in the forest similar to Ents but more discreet. Most lived deep in the Forest of Fangorn. The Ents and Huorns would feed off the river Entwash, where it held magical properties which gave them the ability to move unlike the other trees in the forest. Fangorn forest is the habitat of the Ents. It is named after the oldest Ent, Fangorn (Treebeard). It is also known by the Rohirrim as Entwood. That it quite interesting since it is located in Rohan. When you enter from the steppes of the country and into this forest, you will feel that you have entered a completely different world. Fangorn forest is actually just the easternmost survivor of the immense forest that spanned all of Eriador and Calenardhon in the First Age and early Second Age, but which was destroyed by the Númenóreans and Sauron. Fangorn forest was the oldest part of Treebeard's realm, and to here the Ents retreated. As you have read… The forest is not evil at all. It is old, dark, thick and angry but far from evil. “The fairies were dancing on the meadows, the birds were singing, the leaves were juicy and green. Everything was idyllic and perfect. The many voices of the hot summer sounded in the country, but they slowly faded out when they came closer to the dark forest; Fangorn. It was so thick and dim that you felt like you became deaf when you entered it. You could not even hear the wind rush through the tall trees, you could not hear any birds or insects, nor did you see any day light. There, deep inside that forest was a lake; a calm and dark lake where the sun just happened to peek out from behind the big crowns of the surrounding trees. An old willow was dipping his branches in the water of the lakes and small flowers fell down on the surface from an aromatic linden. The water was black as the long winter night. You could not see the bottom of it as the ground quickly led you do the big depths of the lake. Suddenly something disturbed the water. A small eddy current made the water rush down in rings in the middle of the lake. The flowers danced around in the current as well and slowly something rose from it. A head with raven black hair. Hair that was as black as the water of the lake. Seaweed, leaves and flowers were stuck in it. The tall slender body that came afterwards was pale as the moon and it was naked. The man stood on top of the water as if he was light as a feather and slowly placed a violin up to his shoulder. The music that filled the air was entrancing. It was beautiful yet mysterious and scary. His humming voice put you in a trance where you could only stare at him. Slowly, step by step, you moved towards The Nix’s lake. The water started touching your feet. And when the dark haired boy suddenly shot his eyes open and stared at you, those sad blue eyes were the last thing you would see before you walked out into the darkness of the lake and never came back.” That is home of the Nix.
