NIALL “THE NIX” OREN*
Niall is a boy whose face you usually don’t forget. Not because it is overly handsome, but because it is not quite ordinary. He has very blue eyes and short dark hair that looks like it is cut after a pot. He has high cheekbones, and generally a slender-looking face. His teeth are a bit big, but they are usually hidden behind soft lips. His nose is straight and pointy. Another very special feature about his body is his big ears. Niall has disliked them for a long time, however the older he became, he slowly learned to accept his looks. He is still teased by others because of them, but he usually ignores the bullies – if he is not in a mood to answer them back. Niall is also quite tall. I wouldn’t say that he is the tallest one in Middle Earth, but he is among the tall kids. His feet are big and so are his hands, but what makes them look big is not a wide palm. It is his long fingers. He has a very weird medieval style. Mostly because he really likes it, and because he has realised that he cannot walk around naked when he is away from his lake. He is quite poor, so he cannot afford any fancy robes. When he is not naked, he is usually dressed in natural colours like soft red, blue, grey, brown and green. He is often wearing a soft leather jacket, when it is cold and brown leather boots – that look older than the boy himself. One of his characteristics in his dressing style is his handkerchiefs which are usually the opposite colour of the shirt he is wearing, and he has always one handkerchief wrapped around his neck. Why? No one knows. He also looks like that in the summer time. It is very easy to see that his clothes are old. Most of them have lost their colour and others are quite ragged, but despite of that, the boy really likes his own special style. It is quite interesting about his general appearance. The Nix looks so elegant in his lake with his violin or his lute, but when he gets out of water, he is clumsier than the clumsiest human being…
Niall has a very good heart. It is actually often that he does what his heart tells him to do, than what his brain says. It may be dangerous at times and foolish, but he tends to listen more to his heart. He is very caring and loving towards all living creatures, though he usually has some clashes with animals because of his clumsiness. He is a boy who can pull himself together and appear strong in front of them, if he really focuses, but he has not yet reached the stage in his life where he has realised that, so sadly most animals patronize him since he appears weak in their eyes. Actually that happens with some people as well. They often use his good heartedness for their own gain and act as if they are his friends when they really aren’t.
Having a lonely life has made Niall reach out to people who are more like himself. That happened when he came out of his lake, since before he believed that he was the only magical person in the entire Middle Earth. He did not know about magic before it showed itself for him and afterwards his life became even more complicated. He felt more and more drawn away from the kids in his class and he ended up being all alone with this big secret of his, but when he came across someone he could talk to; he finally found out that he was not the only one who was magical and was therefore better at getting friends, since he could be himself. The boy is quite social and usually makes a very good impression on people, because he is generally nice. He would die for his friends and even kill if it could save their lives, so even though Niall is perhaps awkward and unpopular in some people’s eyes (he is after all clumsy and poor), he makes a very good and loyal friend.
Another characteristic for the character is that he is very witty. He comes with small smart-ass comments whenever he feels like it, and sometimes they tend to bring him in bad situations with bullies and teachers. During the years Niall has learned to shut up, however it happens that he still opens his mouth if he has something to say. That part of him is not very well-mannered. The boy is also a talker. He talks a lot and actually blabs about everything and nothing – even if he is in the company of a person, he does not like. The only time when he is quiet is when he is nervous, scared or sad. It rarely happens however, since Niall is usually in a good mood… or at least he is trying to be. It is still a mystery for me (the creator) why he tries to be happy most of the time. Perhaps it is because he has learned that it is always better to always look at the bright side of life… however it is unlikely that he has come to this philosophy yet. I believe that it is generally his young spirit that makes him this way.
So, Niall is extremely old. And a boy has usually some kind of relationship towards girls. Well, it is a bit hard to explain how Niall feels about them. It is no wonder that he easily falls in love, and I bet that he has had crushes on all of the beautiful girls in Middle Earth, however those crushes quickly fade away because most of the time he falls for girls that are way out of his league. Or he even happens to hurt them when he lures them into his lake to drown. Not on purpose of course. It is his nature. He is completely oblivious to the girls that happen to like him back, and when they try to flirt with him, he does not often understand their intentions. Niall is a guy who believes in true love and love at first sight, however he has never really experienced true love. He has actually never kissed nor had a girlfriend for that matter. As mentioned before, the boy is quite awkward, and even those girls who fall in love with him change their feelings into friendship, since he tends not to understand what they truly want from him.
You can really call the boy naïve. That is what he is, and you cannot get around it. He is not only that, he is idealistic, and he believes that every problem in the world can be solved with love and friendship. He tends to overlook the really problematic things in life, and his naivety reaches all the way to his relations with people. As mentioned before, he never really sees why girls are nice to him. He thinks that all of them are just friendly, and that there are no deeper feelings involved. Luckily, it is not often that someone falls in love with him, so he does not have to struggle with that.
His naivety is also a sign of his isolation from the real world.
Niall is very emotional, and when I say very, I really mean it. He can get all worked up around a sad story or even worse; something that happens in real life. It is not rare for Niall to shed a tear for something or someone. He is very compassionate when it comes to love problems and family problems. His mother means everything to him because she is the only family he’s got. He often cries out of anger, if they are in a fight. Even when Niall has to express his feelings, he tends to cry – especially when it is strong feelings. Sometimes it is tears of frustration which he cries, however most of the time they are of real sadness and not just frustration. Now that I write about it, I think that Niall is slightly bipolar, but it is too strong a word to describe him, so emotional will do for now.
As mentioned before, Niall sees good in all people, but that is probably because he has not yet stood face to face with a person he really truly disliked. Of course there are some bullies he avoids, and who he thinks are complete dumbasses, but he does not have a deep hatred towards them; just plain annoyance. When it comes to those bullies, Niall is not one who stands by the sideline and watches. If a person needs his help he will help him, and if he is the victim, he would stand up to the attacker no matter at what cost. At this point Niall seems a bit thick, and he tends not to think before he says something to these bullies. That is usually what brings him into trouble. It is not a rare thing for him to get detention because of his big stupid mouth.
And his feet are just as clumsy as his mouth. Actually not only his feet because the boy does not only trip and fall on flat surfaces, he also drops things. There is nothing he can do about it, and when people comment on that flaw he says that it is one of his many talents (with a small smile playing on his lips).
The Nix is a shapeshifting water spirit who usually appears in human form. The spirit has appeared in the myths and legends of all Germanic peoples in Europe.
Their sex, bynames, and various animal-like transformations vary geographically. The German Nix and his Scandinavian counterparts are males (which is what Niall is based on). The German Nixe or Nixie is a female river mermaid.
The Scandinavian näck, näkki, nøkk, nøkken, strömkarl, Grim or Fosse-Grim were male water spirits who played enchanted songs on the violin, luring women and children to drown in lakes or streams. However, not all of these spirits were necessarily malevolent; in fact, many stories exist that indicate at the very least that The Nix were entirely harmless to their audience and attracted not only women and children, but men as well with their sweet songs. Stories also exist wherein the Nix agreed to live with a human who had fallen in love with him, but many of these stories ended with the Nix returning to his home, usually a nearby waterfall or brook. The Nix are said to grow despondent if they do not have free, regular contact with a water source.
If properly approached, he will teach a musician to play so adeptly "that the trees dance and waterfalls stop at his music."
It is difficult to describe the actual appearance of the nix, as one of his central attributes was thought to be shapeshifting. Perhaps he did not have any true shape. He could show himself as a man playing the violin in brooks and waterfalls (though often imagined as fair and naked today, in actual folklore he was more frequently wearing more or less elegant clothing) but also could appear to be treasure or various floating objects or as an animal—most commonly in the form of a "brook horse" (see below). The modern Scandinavian names are derived from an Old Norse nykr, meaning "river horse." Thus, likely the brook horse preceded the personification of the nix as the "man in the rapids". The Nix and derivatives were almost always portrayed as especially beautiful young men, whose clothing (or lack thereof) varied widely from story to story.
The enthralling music of the Nix was most dangerous to women and children, especially pregnant women and unbaptised children. He was thought to be most active during Midsummer's Night, on Christmas Eve and on Thursdays. However, these superstitions do not necessarily relate to all the versions listed here, and many if not all of them were developed after the Christianizing of the Northern countries, as were similar stories of faeries and other entities in other areas.
When malicious The Nix attempted to carry off people, they could be defeated by calling their name; this, in fact, would be the death of them.
If you brought the Nix a treat of three drops of blood, a black animal, some brännvin (Scandinavian vodka) or snus (wet snuff) dropped into the water, he would teach you his enchanting form of music.
The Nix was also an omen for drowning accidents. He would scream at a particular spot in a lake or river, in a way reminiscent of the loon, and on that spot a fatality would later take place.
In the later Romantic folklore and folklore-inspired stories of the 19th century, the Nix sings about his loneliness and his longing for salvation, which he purportedly never shall receive, as he is not "a child of God." In a poem by Swedish poet E. J. Stagnelius, a little boy pities the fate of the Nix, and so saves his own life. In the poem, arguably Stagnelius' most famous, the boy says that the Nix will never be a "child of God" which brings "tears to his face" as he "never plays again in the silvery brook."
In Scandinavia, water lilies are called "nix roses" (näckrosor/nøkkeroser). A tale from the forest of Tiveden relates of how the forest had its unique red water lilies through the intervention of the Nix:
At the lake of Fagertärn, there was once a poor fisherman who had a beautiful daughter. The small lake gave little fish and the fisherman had difficulties providing for his little family. One day, as the fisherman was fishing in his little dugout of oak, he met the Nix, who offered him great catches of fish on the condition that the fisherman gave him his beautiful daughter the day she was eighteen years old. The desperate fisherman agreed and promised the Nix his daughter. The day the girl was eighteen she went down to the shore to meet the Nix. The Nix gladly asked her to walk down to his watery abode, but the girl took forth a knife and said that he would never have her alive, then stuck the knife into her heart and fell down into the lake, dead. Then, her blood coloured the water lilies red, and from that day the water lilies of some of the lake's forests are red (Karlsson 1970:86).

He had no idea what he had done to deserve this. Niall was sitting and polishing every single shoe he and his mother had, and with his mother’s it was quite a lot. Scrub, scrub, scrub, scrub. The boy frowned at how his happy sunny morning had turned into a boring dark afternoon. He hated this peasant work, and he had no idea why they didn’t give up their life at the countryside of Scotland and move into the nearest town. His mother could get a job there, as a baker or something, and they wouldn’t have dirty shoes anymore. He looked down at the boot he was holding while thinking that and wondered why his mother refused to move. Perhaps she believed that his dad would one day come to look for them, and therefore they had to stay at a place where he could find them? But that was more Niall’s own dream than his mother’s.
“Are you done soon?” a voice sounded from inside. The window to the kitchen was open. “It is dinnertime soon. You can make the table after washing your hands.” She continued, and he could almost hear how she smiled at the irritated sound that had come out from his throat.
“Work work work. That’s all I do.” Niall started complaining even though he knew that it wouldn’t have any effect on her. Actually he did not mind helping out when he was at home. He enjoyed the simple life, however sometimes it was a tad too much. “When can I have the freedom all teenagers talk about?”
“When you have finished cleaning those shoes.” His mother cried out from inside, and made her son roll his eyes at her answer.
With a final scrub, the boy finished his work and stood up from the entrance step to the door and walked inside with dirty clothes. Even his face had managed to get smudgy. He gave his mother a small smile however she just responded with a short sigh. “Niall… Can you please clean yourself before entering the kitchen? I have food here.”
“Alright alright.” He said and marched with long steps to the bathroom.
