The stable yard was amass with activity even though the sun had barely broken the horizon. Horses nickered from their ties, chickens clucked in their coops and dogs slunk about in hopes of scraps after the breaking of the fast. More than one servant hurried through the dawn light to achieve their chores and the slight figure that slipped into the stables was no different.
At first glance, the slender figure could be mistaken for that of a young youth in all its long legged glory but the mop of silken sunshine hair that the hood fell back to reveal told a different story. No young boy was this but a female with eerily striking features and a graceful beauty enough to rival even the elves of old. As a crisp beam of light broke over the village gates, it danced over high cheekbones, indigo eyes and delicately pointed ears that were typically hidden by the golden locks.
It was really to bad that her stunning countenance was ruined by the rough leathers she wore and the various weapons she packed upon her person. A wench of peasant breeding she obviously was not but her demeanor had long ago lost the typical ladylike behavior that was seen of the noble class.
In fact, it if wasn't for the insistence of her uncle that she appear in a dress at all, she would long ago have been given up as hopeless.
None of the other ladies of the keep knew what to make of the odd duck among them and only Eowyn made any attempt to befriend her any longer. Since gossiping about home and hearth was not exactly Emerlian's cup of tea, she'd been left alone to finally do as she may and she quiet liked it that way.
Oh, to be fair, it wasn't that Emmi went out of her way to be unfriendly or that anyone harbored any true dislike for her. It was simply that she shared very little in common with the ladies and the only place she felt truly comfortable was on horseback. She'd long ago come to the realization that she was different than the others about and had stopped trying to fit in after a particularly bad incident when she'd managed to catch her skirt on fire in the kitchen and almost burn down her uncles house.
From that moment on, she'd quit pretending to be something she was not and others had left her alone. Well, almost everyone.
Slipping into the stables, Emmi steathily strolled down the alleyway until she can to her faithful friends stall. She was rewarded with a bright eyed nicker and a following nuzzle for the apple Shandora always knew she carried. No words were needed between the pair as the lithe blond gave the horse the treat and then slipped under the rope so that she was inside of the stall.
Then and only then did she hear the voices entering the stable and pause to listen. Male revelry had her rolling her eyes good naturedly before the muttering of her name caught her attention. Frowning, Emmi moved to the door of the stall and leaned on the wall just as the conversation took a mean turn and she closed her eyes. Some things never changed and there were men among the ranks of the Rohirrim riders who resented the presence of a woman among them. It was enough to make her want to bash a few heads together or show them just how well she could out ride their arrogant arses.
Unfortunately, even that would solve nothing and she knew it. IT only brought home the feeling of not belonging once more and she wondered if she'd ever truly find a place to call home. Really? So what if she had a talent for horses? So what if she couldn't cook a meal to save her life? She was still a woman and wanted the same things women generally wanted out of life! Would she ever find a place to call her own? Would she ever be able to dream of the things she would not admit to herself that she wanted.. Much less anyone else?
The nudge of Shandora's muzzle brought her back to earth and she realized that the sounds of the men's voices were once again retreating. Shaking her head at her own helpless musings, Emmi laid a hand on her horses neck. Hugging the beast tight, the young woman sighed deeply before pulling back and squaring her shoulders.
"Who needs them, right old friend? Tis you and I and as long was we are together we have the world, aye?"
When the horse bobbed its head in response, Emmi let out a twinkling laugh.
"Lets be about it shall we then? We've got a few horses arses to show a thing or two!"
